About The Inverness Burns Club
The Inverness Burns Club was formed in 1949 as a club which was
“…..made up of people interested in the works of Robert Burns and in Scottish literature.” and ”….in the Burgh of Inverness”
Inverness (from the Gaelic : Inbhir Nis meaning “Mouth of the Ness”) is regarded as the capital of the Highlands and is the administrative centre of the Highland Council. Inverness gained “City” status in 2001 when the Royal Burgh of Inverness became the City of Inverness.
The 18th century Battle of Culloden which inspired Burns to song and poem took place on nearby Drumossie Moor.
Events
1. Our 2023 AGM was held on Tuesday 11th April 2023 at Inverness Golf Club. One of the main items of business was the election of office bearers.
2. Our 2024 Anniversary Supper will be held once again at Inverness Golf Club on Friday 26th January. The price for members is £40 (which includes the membership subscription of £10). However, non-members can also attend for £42. The usual entertainment is being provided, including guest speakers, music, a piper to pipe in the haggis, which will be addressed by Club President Trevor Nicol. To mark our 75th anniversary in 2024, Inverness Burns Club are being honoured with a civic dinner by Highland Council in the Town House in Inverness on Saturday 14th September 2024. This date was chosen to mark the fact that Burns visited Inverness in September 1787.

KING Charles III paraphrased Robert Burns during an address to the Scottish Parliament on 12th September 2022.
Following a special Motion of Condolence at Holyrood, where the leaders of the parties shared their memories of the Queen, the King used the Burns poem Epitaph on my own Friend to illustrate his mother’s life of service.
He said: “If I might paraphrase the words of the great Robert Burns, my dear mother was ‘the friend of man, the friend of truth, the friend of age and guide of youth. Few hearts like her’s with virtue warmed, few heads with knowledge so informed.'”
Norwegian Airlines
On 25th January 2018 Norwegian Airlines announced that they would be placing Burns' name and image on the tail fin of one of their aircraft. To reflect Norwegian’s rapid growth in the UK, where it now flies 5 million UK passengers each year to more than 50 destinations, the airline is planning a series of UK tail fin heroes. Robert Burns will become Norwegian’s sixth UK tail fin hero and first Scottish hero, following the announcement of rock legend Freddie Mercury, footballer Bobby Moore, children’s authorRoald Dahl, pioneering pilot Amy Johnson, author Jane Austen and aviation maverick Sir Freddie Laker.

The Inverness Connection with Robert Burns
In a letter of 7th February 1787 to David Erskine, Earl of Buchan, Burns stated his wish to travel around Scotland: “Your Lordship touches the darling chord of my heart when you advise me to fire my Muse at Scottish story and Scottish scenes. I wish for nothing more than to make a leisurely Pilgrimage through my native country; to sit and muse on those oce hard-contended fields where Caledonia, rejoicing, saw her bloody lion borne through broken ranks to victory and fame; and catching the inspiration, to pour the deathless Names in Song.”
