Atlanta Burns Club Visit 2014

Visit from Atlanta Burns Club on Thursday, 10th July 2014

Present to represent the Inverness Club were Dawson Lamont, President, Cliff Sim Honorary President, Cliff Parr Past President, Glen Stewart – Secretary and Neil Anderson, Club Member.

President Dawson welcomed our visitors and introduced Provost Alex Graham who gave the official Highland Council welcome and stayed and conversed with the visitors for most of the evening which started off in the Old High Church Hall around 8.30pm. The Hall had been tastefully decorated in varied tartan hangings by Ian Chisholm of Duncan Chisholm Kilts.

Six of the original party visiting in 2009 returned along with 24 adults and seven children. It was a great pleasure to welcome back the Tour Organiser, Kate Graham, Richard Graham, Hugh and Mary Jane Peterson, David Grant and the current Atlanta Burns Club President, Woody Woodruff, all of whom were here in July 2009.

Past President Cliff Parr had prepared an official, colour printed programme which was handed to each of our visitors as a memento of their visit and this was presented by our Club President. In turn Richard Graham gave us Atlanta Burns Club chocolates and a bottle of their local liqueur, Southern Comfort, while we provided wine, punch, nibbles and soft drinks and malt whisky, which the visitors thoroughly enjoyed.

President Woody Woodruff thanked us for our generous hospitality and expressed the wish that our association and contacts with their Club continue for many years.

President Dawson asked Past President Cliff Parr to give us a recitation which for this occasion wasn’t by Robert Burns but rather “McAlister, the Man Who Danced before the King”

This was splendidly delivered and very well received by the whole company.

At the conclusion we all sang Auld Lang Syne before the visitors took their leave to return to the Penta Hotel next door. All in all a great night of discourse and conviviality where everyone mixed wonderfully, took lots of photographs and cemented the bonds already established between our respective Burns Clubs.

Whisky provided by Dawson, Cliff and Glen.
